Diamond is a conductor
WebJun 29, 2015 · 1 Answer. Electricity needs charged particles (or quasi-particles) to conduct it. Heat can be conducted with almost any quasi-particle. Diamond is one of the best conductors of heat in existence, and it's because of phonons, ie quasi-particles of lattice vibrations, which are strong because the diamond lattice is strong. Unlike most electrical insulators, diamond is a good conductor of heat because of the strong covalent bonding and low phonon scattering. Thermal conductivity of natural diamond was measured to be about 2200 W/(m·K), which is five times more than silver, the most thermally conductive metal. Monocrystalline synthetic diamond enriched to 99.9% the isotope C had the highest thermal conductivity of any known solid at room temperature: 3320 W/(m·K), though repo…

WebGraphite is a conductor but not diamond because: In graphite, each carbon atom is linked to three carbon atoms via a C - C covalent bond. The fourth electron is delocalized so it is mobile and can conduct electricity. But diamonds have no free electrons because each … WebAug 27, 2024 · Consequently, Si is a much better electrical conductor than diamond, and Ge is even better, although both are still much poorer conductors than a typical metal (Figure 12.6.4). Substances such as Si and Ge that have conductivities between those of metals and insulators are called semiconductors A substance such as Si and Ge that has …
WebDiamond is a bad conductor of electricity: Since each carbon atom is attached to the other four carbon atoms through strong covalent bonds. Hence, no free electrons are present in the diamond crystal. Due to the absence of free electrons, diamond is a poor electrical conductor. Suggest Corrections. WebApr 13, 2024 · 4.
